The Artist... A few words about me, where I've been, where I've come from and some of my influences, I'd tell you where I'm going but I have no idea the journey is interesting though. I was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, into a mining family. My parents moved to Cornwall where I was brought up. They were determined not to see thier sons' down the mine (doon th pit!) The freedom I enjoyed in Cornwall and the sense of space and being surrounded by the sea and sky has had big influence on my art and life, which to be honest are difficult to separate, I have a lot to thank them for.
I've always painted and sketched for as long as I can remember, and on leaving school I was offered a foundation course in at Falmouth School of Art, however, in those days Art was not considered a career so I went to University to study Economics! On completion I still leant towards using my drawing skills and briefly considered a career in Architecture being offered a place at a college in London, but I just couldn't face another seven years of education, so I entered the world of sales and ended up in recruitment and became a successful Headhunter. The 80's & 90's were a whirl (from what I can remember!) and it was great to experience life in the City, at the end of it though it was time for me to give in to the suppressed artist inside and I started painting full time.
From the beginning I decided not to be influenced by the art establishment, they're just not my kind of people, I've nothing against formaldehyde but most people don't have room for a cow suspended in it in their living room! This might have something to do with my down to earth upbringing being of mining stock. When a cow was dead it ended up on your plate! I was determined to utilise the emerging influence of the web to display my art and so taught myself HTML and built my own website, (it's not the best but it is simple),and with a few galleries supporting me along the way I've become a full time artist.
I try to keep my art affordable, I'm just as happy for one of my works to be bought and enjoyed by Mrs Smith from Workington as I am to have an interest from celebrities and millionaires across the world, both of which I've done, it's not about the price it's about someone enjoying a little piece of my soul and passion, or a big piece I'm not fussy!
I now live and work as a full time artist in Windsor, taking my inspiration many things including the beauty of the Great British landscape, the floral form and colour, texture, life past and present and the people I meet. I paint using many mediums but primarily using acrylic on canvas in a variety of themes and styles including: rich land and seascapes, textured colourful abstract and striking popart. My photographic images are in high demand and I try to ensure that my emotions and sense of fun are clearly reflected in all of my art. My work has recently been published worldwide and I'm grateful to my clients for making my original paintings highly sought after.
My Sister in Law rang me from India last year, she couldn't believe that one of her friends had a painting by me on her wall, that made me smile as I didn't know either! (I'm not always sure where my art ends up), later that year she did exactly the same in New York it's good to be in demand globally!
Although I paint in a variety of styles my paintings and photography are representations of feelings and special places that have caught my imagination and stirred strong emotions inside me. Often they're about the feeling of how beautiful the landscape around us is or an emotional response to people and circumstance. Each painting and photograph has its' own story to tell and they mean a lot to me. I hope that everyone gets a little something for themselves out of my art, and in a way that's another story personal to them.
